Katie Byron says, “There are three businesses in our lives – my business, your business and God’s business!”
And that brings me to my topic “THE BIG TWIST”. The saying ‘Who laughs last laughs best’ has some truth to it however, it is not so much who does the last laugh, but the awareness of how life teaches us and gives us lessons with references to how fickle our minds can be.
Not long ago our eyes were looking down with disgrace at Anya Ayoung Chee, who represented us (Trinidad &Tobago) at the Miss Universe contest 2008. Because of her sex scandal tape that was leaked, people rained on her parade, gossiping and slandering her name in every forum. It was a fun and a hot topic for most of us. The blogs and the things people had to say was not only painful but insulting.
The odd thing here was that most people spoke about sex as if it were a crime! Let’s face it, we all have sex and we explore it in whatever/whichever manner we desire moreover it is an individual choice. So it was rather unnerving reading people’s judgmental and derogatory remarks.
What I love about this story is the inner strength and healthy mind that this young woman possessed. She held her head up and moved on bypassing all the negatives. Challenging herself and staying focused she showcased her talent into a magnitude that surpassed all expectations, a quality for which I’ll always admire her.
One newspaper called her great achievement a ‘Comeback’. A ‘COMEBACK’?! A ‘Comeback’ from where?! Her privacy was invaded! She was tainted but she stepped up and moved on by opening another dimension and using it to her advantage. She surely took care of her business while everyone was wrapped up in her business…LOL!
With that being said I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate once again Ms Anya Ayoung Chee on her great achievement as Project Runway’s Season 9 winner and for flying our flag high showcasing our talents, not only as a Trinbagonian but as a Caribbean woman.
Fanga! to you Anya.
